It isn’t easy being an architect. You spend a lot of your time arguing with everyone from planners, contractors and engineers to local councils and neighbourhood busybodies. And while CAD, the design programme used by architects, has been part of the furniture for almost 20 years, the equipment used to operate it has, until recently, had a distinctly old-school feel.
CAD is still at the heart of any office, but now the Apple iMac G5 is rapidly becoming the workhorse of the industry, in part because the entire computer lives inside the screen, allowing plenty of desk space for essentials like coffee and newspapers. With Apple’s new OS X Tiger and Adobe’s new Photoshop CS2 both released this month, the G5 can run the necessary software faster than most people can find inspiration. Fortunately, the G5 comes with a DVD player and recording software GarageBand as standard, so ideas won’t be too far away.
