Fun and functional refrigerator designs

Fridges.jpg

Used to be when you ordered a frig, you had a choice of white, avocado and butterscotch. Now we get white, black and stainless steel. Lots of stainless steel. (Read Johnny's rant.) But as you've read here, designers have gotten creative with retro versions, entire kitchens designed around a handsome Elmira frig, and beautiful art transfers for the key gadget in your kitchen.

No one is having more fun than the Italian designers at Smeg, whose multiple lines of free-standing refrigerators come in colors like lime green, stripes and my personal favorite, the Union Jack.

Necessity is the mother of invention, and in the UK where kitchen space is at a premium, not to mention your typical N.Y. apartment, NorCool has come up with a solution that ramps up storage space and -- wait for this -- by fitting it in the corner!. The site claims that your corner fridge is equivalent to 4 large refrigerators, while only taking up 1 sq.m. of floor area. I say we give them some sort of award.
