Motorlight lamp by Jake Dyson Technology

Motorlight lamp by Jake Dyson

As any self-respecting homeowner must be aware, you can furnish and decorate your pad to the hilt but nothing will ever look good unless you nail the lighting. And sadly it's not as simple a task as stringing up a few Ikon shades in your favourite colour. Experts we may be, but we’re as guilty as the next person for choosing our lights based on aesthetic form over suitable function.

Industrial designer Jake Dyson has put an end to our turmoil with his new creation, Motorlight. Two years in the making, the light does more than simply answer our prayers in the form/function department, it goes further to perform the roles of any and every light we may wish for; uplight, floodlight, ambient and spot.

'I find lighting to be surprisingly limited: you make a choice and you have to stick with it. So my aim was to develop a versatile light, which became Motorlight. It’s functional and flexible - rooms can feel like they’re living and breathing, or pinpointing a precise angle,' says Dyson of his creation.

Using a single lamp and an angle-adjusting reflector, the focusing mechanism means you can adjust the light to suit the situation, setting it to a precise angle so that it continually adjusts itself. And, refreshingly for something so exceedingly functional, it's definitely not an eyesore. Available in clear, white, black, red and blue, you can match your colour scheme and ensure it's properly lit at the same time.
